New England Shuhari is dedicated to teaching authentic Okinawan Shorin Ryu karate in Coventry, Rhode Island. Founded on a passion for martial arts and a desire to spread the benefits of traditional karate.

Sensei Ken Lyons is the owner of the New England Shuhari dojo and 6th degree black belt. Sensei Lyons began his karate journey in New York under Master Teruyuki Higa of Okinawa Kenpo back in the early 80s. It was here that he fell in love with Okinawan karate. After relocating to Rhode Island Sensei Lyons would join the Shorin Ryu Shorinkan headed by Hanshi Shuguro Nakazato. Sensei Lyons would remain a member for more than two decades.

In 2017 Sensei Lyons was appointed USA representative for the Shubukan Uema dojo of Okinawa Japan where he served until resigning in 2024.

In 2024 Sensei Lyons formed the Shuhari Martial Arts Rengokai. This organization is open to like minded martial artists looking to grow through collaboration and mutual respect.
